Author Rachel Naomi Remen M.D. notices that many people with life-threatening illness describe finding less stress and more joy. She writes: “Such people seem to have found through their suffering a deep sense of what is most important to them, and the courage to bring their lives into alignment with it for the first time. Rather than using their strength to endure situations and relationships that betray their deepest values, they have used their strength to make needed change.”
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could align our outer lives with our deeply held values without the threat of death prompting change?
